Mr. Rhoades: Science Grades 8-10 at HODA

Science is a process in which we use logic and induction in order to gain a more perfect understanding of the universe around us. The science program at Hope of Detroit Academy High School seeks to prepare students not only learn new things about science, but to actually do science. By aligning classes to the Next Generation Science Standards, Hope of Detroit Academy offers students the chance to build their science skills by:
1) Reading about science
2) Solving problems using scientific principles
3) Designing and executing science experiments in the laboratory

8th Grade: 8th Grade science will be split into three equal parts from each of the three main branches of science: the nature of waves, the study of astronomy, and the ecological impact of human beings on the planet where we live.
9th Grade: 9th grade Biology will work through the vast scope of life on the planet by building life from the bottom up, starting with atoms and molecules, then telescoping outwards to construct cells, microbes, organisms, and finally ending with the web of inter-relationships between living things in the ecosystem.
10th Grade: 10th grade Chemistry focuses on building up towards the observable structure and properties of matter, starting with the electronic configuration of the elements, their interrelationships as defined by the Periodic table, and the quantitative and qualitative changes that take place during chemical reactions. The endpoint of chemistry is to loop back to biology by returning students to the simple organic chemistry that is the root of all living things.

ABOUT THE TEACHER
Sean R. Rhoades is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Prior to receiving a degree in teaching, he served 25 years in the paint and adhesives industry as a research chemist and information technology specialist. Mr. Rhoades looks forward to the opportunity to share with students the ability to penetrate the complexities of the increasingly technological world of the 21st century using the two most important tools of the scientist: patient observation and razor-sharp reasoning.
